5 Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

Are allergies keeping you away from the dog of your dreams? Not anymore! We've compiled a list of hypoallergenic dogs that will be perfect for you!

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, there are some dog breeds that are better for allergy sufferers. These dogs have non-shedding coats that produce less dander. (Dander is the culprit for allergic reactions.)

1. Maltese

A brave, playful breed in a tiny dog package, the Maltese is a small dog breed. They average 4 to eight pounds, and 7 to 9 inches in height. They have long, silky, white hair that causes minimal shedding. However, they will need to be brushed daily in order to prevent mats. The Maltese breed generally has an adaptable personality and welcomes new friends of all ages!

2. American Hairless Terrier

As you can imagine by the name, this dog is hairless! Thus causing no shedding whatsoever. American Hairless Terriers average 12 to 16 pounds, and 12 to 16 inches in height. Their personalities are energetic, friendly, and intelligent. They are great with children, and need minimal exercise, making them perfect for apartment dwellers.

3. Miniature and Standard Schnauzer

Schnauzers are naturally protective, making them great watch dogs. They are intelligent, cheerful and adaptable. Miniature Schnauzers can weigh on average 11 to 20 pounds with a height of 12 to 14 inches. Standard Schnauzers can weigh 31-44 pounds and have an average height of 18-20 inches. They have a medium, wiry topcoat with a soft undercoat that doesn’t shed, but does require clipping. Both miniature and standard Schnauzers have a distinctive beard.

4. Soft Coated Wheaten

This dog was bred as an energetic and happy farm dog. They average 30 to 40 pounds with a height of 17 to 19 inches. Soft Coated Wheatens make a good hypoallergenic choice for those wanting a medium-sized dog. A Wheaton adapts to any type of surrounding, but does need lots of exercise and grooming. They are happy, outgoing dogs with coats the color of ripening wheat.

5. Afghan Hound

If you are looking for a large dog with little shedding, consider the Afghan Hound.

This dog has a regal presence with a long silky coat. They average 50 to 60 pounds with a height of 26 to 27 inches. Despite their aloof bearing, they can be silly and goofy with their family. Their thick, flowing coat was bred for protection in the harsh mountains where Afghans originated. This coat needs twice weekly grooming.

When it comes to low shedding breeds, this list is only a place to start! Feel free to do your own research to find the dog that is best suited to your lifestyle.
