4 DIY Dog Odor Remover Recipes

The cold months make everyone huddle close making for a tight home with no fresh air circulating. All those smells like wet dog and puppy accidents can ferment and make for a not-so-fresh environment. Thankfully, the following four DIY recipes can remedy that stinky situation for you! Best of all, all of the recipes are dog safe. So use them to rid your house of doggy smells in the air!

Dog Odor Air Freshener

This recipe is a great and natural smelling air freshener that will help eliminate dog smells.

Here are the supplies you'll need:

  • 12 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 2 cups water

  • 3 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol

  • Measuring cup (optional)

  • 1 spray bottle

Once you have all your supplies, you’ll need to mix all the ingredients in a measuring cup and pour them into your spray bottle. If you won't be using a measuring cup, you may measure and pour your ingredients directly into the spray bottle, close the spray bottle, and mix. After that, you’re ready to use your air freshener! Use liberally in smelly areas and surfaces.

Stinky Dog Bed Remedy

This recipe isn’t really a recipe at all. You’ll only need one ingredient! For this odor buster, we’re going to be using the almighty baking soda. We love baking soda because of its amazing scent-neutralizing powers and we’re sure you will too (if you don’t already).

You’ll need to sprinkle baking soda into the offending dog bed. Spread it with a brush and let it sit overnight in a place where your dog won't be able to reach. Once the 8 hours have passed, vacuum up the baking soda. Your pet’s bed will smell much better!

Carpet Freshening Powder

Just like smells gather on your pet’s bed, smells gather and sink into the carpet as well. To clear the carpet of ground-in odors try his recipe.

Here are the supplies you'll need:

  • 1 cup of baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon

  • A shaker container like an empty and cleaned parmesan cheese container

You’ll need to pour and mix your ingredients in the shaker container. Make sure your pets are off the carpet because the cinnamon could cause them to cough. Start by sprinkling it on a small patch of your carpet and let it sit for an hour.

Once the hour is up, you may vacuum the area. If you like the results, you can repeat on a larger area of your carpet. In the end, you’ll be left with a fresh smell of cinnamon cookies instead of a wet dog.

Stove Top Air Freshener

Our last recipe is one that involves fresh ingredients! Use this recipe to fill the air of your house with fresh smells that push out dog odors.

Here are the supplies you'll need:

  • 1 sliced orange

  • 1 sliced lemon

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 4 whole cloves

  • 1 medium pot

  • 2 sprigs of rosemary (optional)

You’ll need to slice your fruit and gather your dry ingredients and put them into your pot. Fill the pot halfway with water and put it over low heat. Let the mixture simmer for as long as you’d like. Some people let it simmer for the day, adding water as needed. As it simmers, your house will be filled with pleasant scents.

We hope you’re inspired to try some of our all-natural recipes! We know they’ll come in handy to keep your house smelling fresh and free of pet scents.
