Does Your Dog’s Personality Reflect Yours?

Your pooch is a part of you and maybe even part of your family. They have been with you through their training and learning right from wrong. They may have picked up your likes and dislikes. Do you think they reflect your personality? Several animal behaviorists answer this question below.

Vladae Roytapel of SoCal Dog Training says that dogs can mirror their owner’s personality to a degree because they are leader-oriented species and social creatures. Victoria Stilwell of Positively agrees, saying there is definitely a tie between an owner and their dog’s personality because dogs learn from their human upbringing and training. What’s more, while it may not be 100 percent accurate, you can usually tell a lot about a person from what breed of dog they have. An energetic, outdoorsy person might have a German Shepherd. A Chihuahua owner is likely to be more settled in their personal life and a homebody.

Researchers say that a dog’s personality is a clue to their owner’s traits. Even friends and family will report the same. If a dog is adventurous and outgoing, it may be because their owner takes them on hikes and spends a lot of time exploring with them.

A dog can mirror their owner's activity levels too, says Stilwell. If an owner is not active, they won’t encourage their dog to be active either. So if they are couch potatoes, their dog will be more chill and like to stay home. A dog who would rather lay down than play more than likely has an owner who is not active. Stilwell shares that dogs are incredibly sensitive to their owner’s moods and feelings, which can reflect in their personality.

So next time your dog is overly bouncy, excited, or shy and you wonder where they got that from, look to your own personality. A dog is not too different from their owner.
