Your dog’s name is important to both you and your pet. Since it will be used for training, communication and showing affection you should give it careful consideration. Below are some tips to keep in mind when making your pup’s name decision

  1. Keep it brief - Choose a name with one or two syllables. Short names are easier for a dog to recognize and remember. The more practical the better. Your dog will learn it through repetitive use and association with him.

  2. Hard and vowel endings - Dogs more readily recognize names with “k”,  “t,” or “d”in them like Rocky, Kona, Sadie. Names with vowel endings are more likely to catch their attention.

  3. Avoid confusing names with commands - Don’t choose a name that might sound like a command during pet training. For instance “Kit” might be mistaken for “sit”.

  4. Choose a long-term name - A puppy named Tiny might be cute but not if he’s to be an adult Great Dane. Choose a name that will still be appropriate years from now.

  5. Avoid a name that resembles someone else in the household - Make sure your pooch doesn’t have a name that sounds like another pet or person in your house. It should sound unique to your dog to avoid confusion.

  6. Try out the name - Call the name outloud several times. Would it feel natural calling that name in a park? Is the name easy to pronounce?

Hopefully these tips will help you pick the perfect canine moniker. Once you’ve chosen a good name, enjoy using it often give that pup loving attention.
